Beyonce is one of the music industry’s top performers, and her shows are evidence that not many artists today are touching her diva status. She wore out the United Center stage Friday in front of an arena packed with exuberant fans of all ages during the latest stop of her “I Am…” world tour.
The show opened with new girl group Richgirl performing a 20-minute set of their most popular songs, including a brief tribute to the late Michael Jackson.
As the curtains closed and reopened for the long awaited superstar, Beyonce aficionados went into a frenzy before the music to her mega-hit, "Crazy in Love," got the crowd moving. "Naughty Girl" was next on the playlist, followed by the ode to sexy club attire, "Freakum Dress." After asking which section of the audience was most ready to dance, she performed "Get Me Bodied" before making a dash off stage.
The former Destiny’s Child lead returned for the more subdued “I Am” portion of the show, dressed in all white against the background of ocean waves, singing more melodic songs like "Smash Into You" and "Ave Maria" before changing costumes again and going into a rendition of "If I Were a Boy" that included a snippet of Alanis Morisette’s "You Oughta Know."
Beyonce’s self-declared alter ego, Sasha Fierce, made her bold appearance in what looked like a glamorized version of a Superwoman suit, as a home video of Beyonce as a child singing and dancing played in the background. This led her to "Radio," where afterward she told the audience about how her love of music came about. She then went on to speak on how women need to stick together before crooning, "Me, Myself and I."
Beyonce gave her all-girl band their chance to shine as they rocked out with an instrumental medley of Michael Jackson hits, before her full-figured background singers took control and sang a clip of Diana Ross’ "Love Hangover."
