The Baltimore City State’s Attorney, Marilyn Mosby, who streaked across the national consciousness like a meteor strike, got a first-hand education in the law on the popular show “Judge Judy” at the turn of the century.
Mosby, 35, is the woman who lowered the legal hammer on the six police officers held responsible in the death of Freddie Gray while he was in their custody, and she has charged them with various felonies including murder and manslaughter.

But back in 2000, Mosby, then 20, was a college student when she made an appearance during the show’s fifth season. Mosby, then known by her maiden name, Marilyn James, claimed a business owner broke in and trashed her apartment while she was away for spring break.
The man, who owned a cigar shop below Mosby’s apartment, allegedly broke her door, left cigarette burn stains and a “disgusting” mess in her bathtub.
Mosby, a college undergrad at Tuskegee University in Alabama at this time, probably increased her love of the law after this experience. She plead her case rather convincingly and calmly while her adversary fumbled on himself repeatedly. Judge Judy eventually rules in her favor to the tune of $1731.90 to pay the bills incurred cleaning her apartment.
Judy tells Mosby she would have awarded her punitive damages as well, but Mosby’s claim was only for bills.
“I feel like there’s finally some justice served,” Mosby tells the camera after the verdict. “I tried to speak to the DA. I spoke to police officers,” she says. “Judge Judy … she finally gave me justice.”‘
A spokesperson for Mosby hasn’t commented on the video’s authenticity, but Mosby did favorite a tweet referencing the clip earlier this month.
Take a look at the entire episode of Mosby’s appearance on “Judge Judy” where she, ironically, used the law to stop a man who tried to punk her into leaving her own apartment.
