DETROIT — The U.S. Coast Guard says it has been searching the Detroit River for a man who jumped off the bridge that connects Detroit and Belle Isle.
Petty Officer Josh Shirey says a Coast Guard vessel was nearby when it received the call Saturday afternoon and spotted the man. Shirey says officers on the vessel threw a flotation device but he didn’t grab it, and they tried to snag his clothing with a pole but he went under the water’s surface.
Shirey says the rescue effort near the island park also includes Detroit Police divers and the Canadian Coast Guard.
The man is described as an African-American in his 30s, wearing a white shirt with a bandage on his left arm.
