ALSIP, Ill. — Authorities say they’ve completed the evidence gathering part of their investigation of an alleged scheme to dig up bodies and resell burial plots at a historic Black cemetery. Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI have been scouring Burr Oak Cemetery in the Chicago suburb of Alsip for a month. In that time, they’ve recovered more than 1,100 bones, exhumed bodies and searched the sprawling cemetery for clues. Four people have been arrested and were indicted this week by a Cook County grand jury on felony charges, including dismembering human bodies and theft. Prosecutors have said the investigation is continuing, but authorities say the phase of the investigation in which they look for evidence is complete. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
