Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is warning residents to be careful of fraud when donating money to charities tied to the Boston Marathon bombings.
In a statement, she recommends donating to charities that you know and trust. She says be suspicious of charities that seemed to have sprung up overnight in connection with current events and be careful especially online. She says make sure the website belongs to a registered charity.
It’s also helpful to research the group. Madigan suggests using the Better Business Bureau, among other consumer groups, and be sure to ask how much will go to the charitable work and how much for fund-raising costs.
Marks of a scam include urgent appeals that play on emotions or if the solicitor or asks for cash payment.
