This year’s Black Women’s Expo opens Friday at McCormick Place North with an agenda that will bring experts, authors, entertainers and vendors under one room.
Seminars will focus on relationships, financial management, health and wellness, and entrepreneurship. The expo, which runs Friday and Saturday, will have a primary focus on the concerns and aspirations of Black women, but there will be something for everyone, said Merry Green, founder and executive producer of The Black Women’s Expo. New at the expo this year are the Senior Lifestyle Pavilion and the Beauty Bar Pavilion. Reappearing will be the Literary CafΘ, Kidz Korner, and the Health and Wellness Pavilion. The Senior Lifestyle Pavilion will provide seniors with a rest area and information on maintaining their health, staying active, and improving their quality of life will be available, organizers explained. At the Beauty Bar Pavilion beauty experts representing various national brands will provide the latest beauty information, do makeovers, answer questions and provide product samples. Green touts the expo as not only beneficial for consumers, but a likely boon for vendors, as well. “The Black Women’s Expo is the perfect marketplace for small to mid-sized businesses and major corporations to reach the all important African American female consumer,” Green said of her event, now in its 17th consecutive year. “It’s imperative for companies to reach out and touch their valued consumers at a grassroots level to expose them to their products and services. The expo continues to provide that opportunity in an attractive marketplace setting. The expo will also feature a job fair and a youth-oriented summit designed to engage youth in talking about issues of concern to them. This year’s summit will focus on reaching out to girls to help those at-risk from being victims of violence or engaging in it. Violence Prevention Summit for Girls is the title of this year’s summit. Part 2 of No More Drama: Real Talk From Real Men about Life and Love hosted by Emilie McKendall, host of Emilie and Friends on WVON Radio will be broadcast live from the Expo on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Rapper MC Lyte’s will broadcast her syndicated Mocha CafΘ radio show live from the expo and will perform on stage at the event. Gospel singer Kim Burrell will host and entertain guests at the gospel talent search and a film, screenwriters and television seminar will present Ernest Thomas (“Rog” on What’s Happening), Cynda Williams (Mo Better Blues), Derrick Roberts (producer, America the Beautiful) and Dunn Pearson Jr. (music producers, New York Undercover, Malcom X, and Get on the Bus) who will discuss filmmaking. “This is an expo not to be missed,” said Craig Gilmore, regional director of multi-cultural markets for State Farm.
