Grammy Award winning neo-soul recording artist Jill Scott is the show’s heroine Precious Ramotswe. Ramotswe is the wise and sensible owner of the only female-owned detective agency in Botswana that not only investigates cases but also helps people solve problems in their lives.
Tony Award winning actress Anika Noni Rose doesn’t really see herself in the brash, takes-no-prisoners secretary she plays in the films, which are based on Alexander McCall Smith’s best-selling book series of the same name.
In Chicago Thursday for a screening of the HBO original series, Rose described her character, Mma Maktusi, as “very quarky, a little uptight.”
The petite Broadway star of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "Caroline," or "Change" fame was relaxed and personable as she talked to reporters at the DuSable Museum where the film was screened.
Rose had no problem breaking down Mma Maktusi.
“She doesn’t consider herself an attractive woman, and she hasn’t really been treated as such in life. She’s very, very smart, and she’s never really been recognized for that and she thinks it’s because of the fact that she’s not attractive … Because of that, she works ultra hard. And she’ll tell you about yourself,” Rose told the Defender. “She is a perfectionist’s perfectionist.”
