CARBONDALE, Ill. — Ameren says its crews have found major unexpected damage in and around Carbondale after severe storms moved across southern Illinois, leaving tens of thousands of customers without power. The electric utility said Sunday evening that 40,200 customers remained without power and that crews had restored power for 28,600 customers. The utility expects power to be back on by late Tuesday, except in Carbondale, where customers should be restored by Thursday. Ron Pate is vice president of regional operations for Ameren Illinois Utilities. He says Ameren is sending more crews and specialized equipment to Carbondale to help with damage that far exceeded expectations. Pate says the utility’s poles, wires and equipment all suffered damage. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
