October 31 was the opening and first day of work at Amazon’s Fulfillment Center in Markham, located at 159th & Dixie Highway. Mayor of Markham, Roger Agpawa, and Cook County Board President, Toni Preckwinkle; 15th District State Senator, Napoleon B. Harris; 30th District State Representative, Will Davis; 38th District State Representative, Debbie Meyers-Martin and Amazon Site Manager, Tarun Aggarwal attended the grand opening.
The Markham center is the second facility in the south suburbs. The Matteson Fulfillment Center opened on October 10. Both facilities will employ 3,000 workers. In addition, Illinois now has 93 Amazon facilities with 36,000 workers. Employees at the Markham facility will work alongside the newest generation of robots in a building that can house up to 50 million products.
“Employment opportunities by Amazon can be life-changing for the thousands of employees who work here now. We want to celebrate this moment to acknowledge the commitment of Amazon to Markham and to send our workers off to a great first day of work,” says Mayor Agpawa. Amazon provides employees with at least $16 per hour and comprehensive benefits from the first day on the job. In addition, Amazon prioritizes the safety of all its employees and supports them with paid leave so they can take time off without having to worry about missing a paycheck.
Amazon continues to provide diverse employment opportunities for people of all backgrounds and skill levels, announcing today 150,000 seasonal jobs are now available across the U.S., including 4,500 in Illinois. All Amazon jobs in the U.S., including seasonal roles, have an average starting pay of $18 per hour, sign-on bonuses up to $3,000, and an additional $3 per hour depending on shifts in many locations. Today’s seasonal roles come in addition to the 7,700 full and part-time operation jobs.
