National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman is bringing in the new year with some new words.
Gorman, who made history in January as the youngest known Inauguration poet, partnered with Instagram to share a new piece entitled “New Day’s Lyric” just in time for the new year.
On Wednesday (December 29), Gorman posted a video of her reciting the new poem in an empty theater while sporting a stunning one-shoulder white gown and royal braided updo. Her words, powerfully summarize the time, ending yet another unpredictablely hard year while looking ahead –– together –– to a new one.
“May this be the day / We come together. Mourning, we come to mend / Withered, we come to weather/ Torn, we come to tend/ Battered, we come to better. / Tethered by this year of yearning, / We are learning That though we weren’t ready for this, / We have been readied by it / We steadily vow that no matter / How we are weighed down, / We must always pave a way forward.
“I wrote A New Day’s Lyric both to celebrate the new year & honor both the hurt & humanity of the last one,” Gorman wrote. “I’m always shy to quote my own poems, but I believe it in my bones when I say: Come, look up with kindness yet, for wherever we come together, we will forever overcome.”
Gorman also became a best-selling author this year, with her Inauguration poem, The Hill We Climb, and her books, Change Sings, and Call Us What We Carry, selling out during their pre-order run.
