All Police Stations Cleared of Asylum Seekers, City Officials Say

For the first time in months, city police stations have been cleared of asylum seekers, Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration announced on Monday.

As of Thursday, Dec. 14, the city announced that all police stations were cleared of these new arrivals.

“I am grateful to City workers, faith leaders and everyone working toward this stage in the new arrivals mission,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said. “I also extend gratitude to the police officers across in our districts who continued to perform their duties while managing this humanitarian crisis, as well as the mutual aid volunteers who spent countless hours outside police stations providing care and compassion to asylum seekers.”

Since August 2022, the city has received around 26,000 asylum seekers from the Southern border. Currently, 27 temporary shelters in the city accommodate nearly 14,000 of them.
