School is out for most of the city’s school children. Still, one South Side alderman is not letting up in her effort to provide a safe passage for youth shuttling back and forth to school.
Alderwoman Latasha R. Thomas (17th) is working to ensure that students’ journey from home to school and back is violence free. Thomas, along with community members, created the Safe Passage Initiative. She announced the program June 8 at Randolph Magnet Elementary School, 7316 S. Hoyne.
The Safe Passage Initiative will involve parents, block clubs, church members, school officials and the Chicago Police Department overseeing the routes that the students take to and from school. Their presence along these routes, Thomas believes, will make them safer for the children.
Thomas, along with the 17th Ward Ministerial Alliance, Chicago Public Schools officials and Chicago Police Department representatives, came up with the initiative as a way to combat the violence, including murders, involving CPS students.
