Concerned that the already relatively high number of shootings will spike more, especially with summer approaching, city council members called for an evaluation of Chicago Police Department resources in communities that have seen continual up ticks in violent crimes. “While we appreciate (that) the Chicago Police Department is committed to intelligence-led policing strategies to deploy police officers and resources into high incident areas of the city, we also need to continually re-assess these strategies in light of rising violence against our youngest and most vulnerable citizens,” said Alderwoman Sandi Jackson (7th), co-sponsor of a resolution to assess the department’s deployment efforts. According to the proposed resolution, which was introduced in City Council on Wednesday, the utilization of police resources and officers in the current police districts and beats is not consistent with the crime rates in some areas. Some city areas have higher crime rates but fewer police officers assigned to the district. Ald._Isaac_Carothers__29th_.jpg    Alderman Isaac Carothers (29th), chairman of the council’s Police & Fire Committee and co-sponsor of the resolution, requested for police brass to appear before the committee to find more ways to quell the problem. “We must do something now to stem this tide before the summer begins. We simply must get a firm grip on the problem and reduce the increasing violence among our youth,” Carothers said. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved.
