Ald. Leslie Hairston Announces Retirement

In a statement issued today, Alderwoman Leslie Hairston announced her retirement.  See her statement below:

“After 24 years as alderperson, I am announcing my decision to retire at the end of my term in 2023. For more than 30 years, I have held jobs serving the public and it is time for me to look at the next chapter of my life.  While I haven’t made any decisions yet, rest assured it will be active, engaged and committed to making my community better. It just will not be as an alderperson.

Although nothing has come easy, the 5th Ward can take credit for a long list of accomplishments. Below, are some of the highlights:

  • Starbucks
  • Stony Island Arts Bank
  • Local Market Grocery Store
  • Aldi’s Grocery Store
  • Trader Joe’s Grocery Store
  • Gary Comer Education Campus
  • Revere Community Housing
  • Sophy Hotel
  • Shoreland Renovation
  • Solstice Construction
  • New Fire Station
  • Greater Grand Crossing Library
  • Hyde Park Career Academy Improvements
  • Access to lakefront
  • Metra Station Improvements
  • Tri-Masters Kids Triathlon
  • Chosen Few Picnic
  • South Shore Summer Festival
  • Obama Presidential Library

It has been an honor for me to represent and serve one of the most independent wards in the city of Chicago. I hope the next alderperson will continue in the same 5th Ward tradition and serve with integrity, independence, and perseverance.
