A campus police shootout at Alabama A&M University left one student injured on Monday (March 18).

According to Fox News, the shooting unfolded in the stairwell of a dorm hall while a campus police officer was conducting a routine security check.

The officer was patrolling the fifth floor of the residence hall when he heard gunshots from a floor below. The officer and a student shot at each other in the stairwell.

“Earlier today, there was an officer-involved shooting at the Knight Complex on campus resulting in one injury,” the university said in a statement. “Authorities have contained any immediate threats as the investigation continues.”

Authorities haven’t released any other details about the shooting or the identity of the student or campus police officer.

The shooting came amid students returning to campus from spring break.

“It surprised me,” one student said. “I was like we just got back from spring break and they already doing this. They shouldn’t be bringing this on campus.”

This is the second shooting at Knight Complex in less than a year.
