African American Clergy Rally to Back Candidates for Key Seats Affecting Black Community

Cook County Democratic Party Chairman Toni Preckwinkle to Join Mass Group in Standing in Full Support of Attorney Clayton Harris Iii, Commissioner Larry Rogers and Mariyana T. Spyropoulos.

A mass group of Faith leaders will gather at one of Chicago’s most historic churches to endorse three candidates for offices that are deemed “critical” to the Black community. The press conference is being held at the First Baptist Congregational Church where Reverend George W. Daniels is the pastor.

Attorney Clayton Harris III is being endorsed for the Cook County State’s Attorney. Attorney Harris is a lifelong Democrat running to bring safety and justice to Cook County as our next State’s Attorney. An experienced prosecutor and government leader who has managed offices at the city and state levels, Clayton has what it takes to hold violent offenders accountable and push forward on reform.

“It is imperative that the next Cook County State’s Attorney has a keen sense of not only the challenges impacting Black youth, but also the negative impact that violent crime has on all levels of society. We view Attorney Harris as the right choice who will have a no-nonsense approach to crime, all while working just as hard to address the obvious flaws within the criminal justice system.” says Pastor Ira Acree of the Greater St. John Bible Church of Chicago.

Commissioner Larry Rogers Jr. not only is endorsed by the at-large clergy group, but the faith leaders will also speak to the countless contributions that the Commissioner and his family has given towards the upward mobility of the Black community.

“Commissioner Rogers has taken what was formerly a very obscure and visibly distant office, to an elevated functioning office that has benefited hundreds of thousands of Chicago area residents. The Commissioner has taken his outreach seminars in parts of the Black community to which no other governmental leader has gone. He has brought property tax relief to hundreds of thousands of African American homeowners.” says Bishop Trotter of the Sweet Holy Spirit Church of Chicago.

Bishop Trotter adds, “Commissioner Rogers has delivered nothing short of relief to homeowners that have been misled and hoodwinked by the ineptness of the current Cook County Assessor. Larry Rogers Jr. has continued to be the face of honesty and integrity in Illinois politics and government.

Mariyana T. Spyropoulos is also being endorsed for the Cook County Circuit Court of Cook County. As Commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. Elected to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Board of Commissioners in 2010, Mariyana served as Board President from 2015-19. As president, she embraced green infrastructure and oversaw the disinfection of Chicago’s waterways – a project that directly benefited the region and created jobs.

A former Assistant State’s Attorney, Mariyana earned her law degree at UIC Law and her MBA from Loyola University Chicago.

“Commissioner Spyropoulos will bring fairness and reform to the circuit courts. She will streamline services and create programs to reduce long wait lines that have frustrated residents throughout Cook County. But we are most impressed by her sense of diversity and inclusion.” says Bishop Shirley Coleman of the Spiritual Wholistic Churches of Love and Faith.

Mass group to also announce support of MWRD President Kari Steele and her endorsed slate of candidates for MWRD Commissioner which include Marcelino Garcia, Daniel “Pogo” Porgozelski, and Precious Brady-Davis.
