Adelita Grijalva has won the special election for Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, giving House lawmakers enough support to force a vote on the public release of the Jeffrey Epstein Files.

On Tuesday (September 23), Grijalva, a former Pima County supervisor, defeated Republican Daniel Butierez, filling the House seat previously held by her late father, Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D), who died from cancer-related complications in March, per The Hill.

Grijalva’s election to Arizona’s 7th District, which includes much of the southern part of the state and part of Tucson, will provide the final signature needed for a bipartisan discharge petition to force a floor vote on a measure demanding the Justice Department release all remaining files tied to Epstein.

Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) have led the effort, with support from every Democrat and several Republicans, including Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), and Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.). The petition was one signature short before Grijalva’s special election win.

Another election in Georgia saw Republican Jason Dickerson hold onto the state Senate District 21 seat. Though Democrat Debra Shigley lost the race, her overperformance in the Trump +34 district was viewed as continued momentum for the party heading into the 2026 midterm elections.

“By overperforming in this Trump +34 district, another important trend is clearly emerging — Republicans are running scared across the country while Democrats are standing their ground and winning in red, blue, and purple districts,” Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin said.
