Chicago’s very own Erica Hubbard, who many know from the hit BET sitcom, “Let’s Stay Together,” said that she is keeping busy now that season 4 is a wrap. The South Side native said she is currently working on a new film.
“72 Hours,” directed by Christopher Nolen is a drama where Hubbard’s character gives her love interest 72 hours to get his life together. It was shot in Chicago and comes out early next year.
Other new movies include “Black Coffee” and “My Favorite Five.”
Besides continuing her acting career, the actress said she is still invested in mentoring youth. When she was in town in May she participated in the 2014 annual Youth Summit and Job Expo hosted by Rep. Robin Kelly of the second congressional district at Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy.
Hubbard said she happily accepted the congresswoman’s invitation because it fit in line with the Erica Hubbard Foundation’s mission.
“I go around and I mentor the youth and encourage them and try to inspire them to keep getting their education, stay in school and stay off the streets,” Hubbard said.
Having come from an at-risk community, she said she is better able to connect with some of the youth she mentors.
“They know that if I came from an environment like them, and I’m doing what I’m doing now, well it just encourages them and gives them hope,” Hubbard said.
“They need someone to talk to, someone to encourage them so they can have hope because if they don’t see it, they almost don’t believe it.”
Hubbard really is a true Chicagoan. She said growing up she loved to visit the roller skating rink, go out dancing and enjoy the Lakefront. Even as an adult, she still makes time for Navy Pier during her visits home. One of the things she appreciates the most about the city are the museums, she said.
“I don’t see museums like the ones Chicago has to offer when I travel,” Hubbard said.
The first-time mommy said she is also enjoying motherhood. Her daughter is almost 3-years-old. When shooting season 3 and 4 of “Let’s Stay Together,” she said there were some long days and she needed all the help she could get. The only real secret to juggling work and a baby is to have a team.
“You have to have lots of help, and not just one or two people to rely on,” said Hubbard, who added she had friends, family and her mom helping her. She grew up with a brother and three sisters.
Even though the last two seasons took up a lot of her time, Hubbard said filming was a lot of fun because it really brought everyone together.
“Three and four were shot together so we were with each other for like three months and became a lot closer,” she said. “We’d work long hours and we shot 22 episodes all together, it was amazing.”
People in the spotlight are always able to hide some things from the public eye. Hubbard decided to share one thing about herself that fans don’t know.
“A lot of people don’t know I speak in tongues, I am very spiritual,” she said. “I’m saved, but I’m very quiet about my spiritual life, and maybe it’s time I speak up about it.”
