Larry Hawkins, Ed. D., was recognized nationally as an authority on the use of sports as an educational tool. In his role as former head coach for the Carver High School basketball team, he led the team to the state championship in 1963.
Larry Hawkins, Ed. D., was recognized nationally as an authority on the use of sports as an educational tool. In his role as former head coach for the Carver High School basketball team, he led the team to the state championship in 1963.
Hawkins died Friday at the University of Chicago Hospitals after a long illness. He was 78.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, 10 a.m., at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, 5850 S. Woodlawn Ave.
At his passing, Dr. Hawkins was director of the Office of Special Programs-College Prep at the University of Chicago and had received numerous awards and recognitions.
Since 1956, he used his life to help equip young people with the tools they need to attend a college of their choice and to become good citizens who could choose how to live their lives.
Born in Chicago, he attended Douglass Elementary School and was a 1948 graduate of Wendell Phillips High School where he was a star basketball player.
Hawkins received an associate’s degree from Wilson Junior College, served in the U.S. Army, completed his bachelor’s degree at George Williams College and earned master’s degrees from George Williams College and Roosevelt University.
