A 28-year-old Army sergeant has been identified as the suspect in the shooting of five soldiers at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
On Wednesday (August 6), officials believe Sgt. Quornelius Radford, a logistics specialist from Jacksonville, Florida, opened fire shortly before 11 a.m. at his workplace on the base, per NBC News.
Radford, assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, has been stationed at Fort Stewart since 2022 and has no record of combat deployment, according to the military. He allegedly used a personal handgun in the shooting and was quickly tackled and subdued by fellow soldiers.
“These soldiers, without a doubt, prevented further casualties,” Brig. Gen. John Lubas, commander of Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield, said in a statement.
According to Lubas, the injured soldiers are all in stable condition and expected to recover. A motive for the attack remains unclear. Lubas noted that the incident took place at Radford’s place of duty and involved his co-workers.
“We’re still not certain about the motivations,” he said.
Investigators are also working to determine how Radford was able to bring the weapon onto the base, where armed guards and security protocols are present. Lubas also confirmed that Radford had no known military disciplinary record. However, Radford was arrested in May for DUI by the Georgia State Patrol, and the incident hadn’t been reported to his chain of command until after the shooting.
Radford is currently in pretrial confinement, where he is waiting for a charging decision from the Office of the Special Trial Counsel.
