Chicago’s Praize Productions, Inc. is debuting a new show that dares to ask a simple but radical question: What happens when Black women stop working and start resting?
On Sunday, April 13, the award-winning arts and production company will premiere “Complexions,” a multidisciplinary performance that weaves dance, theater, and spoken word into a moving meditation on rest, identity, and power. The show centers Black women and the journey of unlearning the deeply ingrained belief that productivity equals value.
Under the direction of Enneréssa LaNette Davis—executive artistic director and resident choreographer—Complexions is described as an immersive experience meant to “speak truth and emotional freedom to the soul.” The show invites audiences to witness what it looks like when Black women reclaim their bodies, their time, and their peace.
The production features performances by PPI’s professional RIZE Pro-Elite Company, made up of women of color, and its RIZE Youth Company, a pre-professional ensemble of dancers ages 5 to 17. It also includes contributions from celebrated guest choreographers Dominique Hamilton, Kevin Iega Jeff, and Monique Haley.

In addition to dance, audiences can expect live music from acclaimed musicians Junius Paul and Isaiah Collier, along with a host of talented Chicagoland singers, musicians, and spoken word artists.
Davis, who founded PPI to provide a platform for Black artists and communities, continues to lead the company with an eye toward cultural storytelling and artistic excellence. With Complexions, that mission remains front and center.
