Teen Fatally Shot, Another Injured in Large, Chaotic South Loop Gathering

One teen is dead, and another person was injured after being discovered at a Downtown Chicago bank parking lot.

Witnesses told ABC7 Chicago that on Saturday night, hundreds of young people gathered in the South Loop area where the shooting occurred in the 500 block of West Roosevelt Road near Canal Street.

When officers arrived at the scene of the shooting, they discovered two individuals who were shot. Both were transported to Stroger Hospital and initially listed in critical condition.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, one of the victims, a 17-year-old teen named Jeremy Smith, died from his injuries.

The second victim, who is 15 years old, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. He is in fair condition.

An employee at the nearby White Palace Grill recounted the scene to ABC7 Chicago, which was chaotic, stating that police issued warnings to businesses in the area.

“Maybe about 500… the Walgreens parking was filled with young people, anywhere from late teens to mid-20s,” the employee told ABC7. “They were traveling around the block. The police told us to lock the doors, so we did.”

One person is in custody, and Chicago police recovered a gun at the scene.

Police have filed criminal charges against nine teenagers who were present at the gathering where the shooting occurred. However, no charges have been filed in connection with the shooting itself, according to the authorities.

The teens are charged with misdemeanors such as disorderly conduct, breach of peace, reckless conduct, and assault. Additionally, three of them received citations for violating curfew.

ABC7 Chicago contributed to this report.
