Two San Francisco Sheriff’s Department clerks have been awarded more than $1 million over alleged racial discrimination in the department, per Face2Face Africa.
Clerks Danielle Dillard and Kim Lee filed a lawsuit in 2020 against the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department, alleging that they were being targeted and subjected to racial harassment by white employees. In the suit, the women also accused the department of violating the Fair Employment and Housing Act.
After a four-week trial, a jury found the department failed to properly look into allegations of white employees subjecting the clerks to a hostile work environment. The jury awarded Dillard and Lee over $1 million.
Angela Alioto, lead trial counsel for the case, applauded the jury’s decision.
“It’s such a great victory that this jury saw right through the city’s pretexts and saw the insidious racism that is at different offices throughout the city, but specifically in this case at the sheriff’s office. The hatred that is racism has no place in San Francisco,” Alioto said in a statement.
