City Year Chicago will commemorate the legacy of the great leader Martin Luther King, Jr. through a Day of Service on January 18, 2021. As we recognize the 26th anniversary of this event as “a day on, not a day off”, it is important now more than ever that we pay homage to Dr. King’s advocacy and how his commitment to equity and justice for all is even more important today.
We invite you to our virtual Opening Ceremony featuring special guest speakers: City Year Chicago’s Executive Director Myetie Hamilton, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, States Attorney Kim Foxx, Jahmal Cole, and a few more prominent leaders.
“Dr. King has been an inspiration in my entire life. His fight for equality and justice has played a huge part in why I have dedicated my life to serving Chicago’s youth. Hosting this day of service in his honor is one of the highlights of our year,” said Myetie Hamilton, Executive Director of City Year Chicago.
Following our virtual Opening Ceremony, City Year Staff and Corps Members will engage in three (3) forms of service: Distribution of 300 laptops at three of our CPS partner schools, packing school supplies at Wintrust Arena for hundreds of students preparing for a return to school buildings – collected from our loyal sponsors in a supply drive held the week prior. Lastly, our AmeriCorps Members and City Year staff will participate in a virtual School Mural Project that will be designed from the safety of their own homes.
Opening Ceremony begins at 10:15 am via Zoom – (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/city-year-chicago-mlk-day-of-service-opening-program-2021-tickets-135414563605).
Low Contact Service Opportunities: School Supply Packing & Laptop Distribution will be held from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.
