A 7-year-old girl who was shot in the head on the Southeast Side during an apparent gang-related shooting has been upgraded from critical to guarded condition as Chicago Police continue its search for the gunman. Desiree Sanders was riding on her scooter near her grandmother’s home Wednesday afternoon in the 8000 block of South Manistee Avenue when an unidentified gunman emerged from a nearby alley and opened fire on two males running past the girl, police said. The first-grader at Bradwell School on 77th Street and Burnham Avenue was struck in the head and taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital. Bullet fragments remain in her head and she may lose an eye, according to the family. An off-duty police officer witnessed the shooting and followed a vehicle that fled the scene. Two teens were arrested in connection with the shooting but later released by police. Copyright 2010 Chicago Defender
