Governor Rauner signs $600 million education package.

Illinois Senate Bill 2059 is now law in the prairie state. The Chicago Defender has learned that Governor Rauner has signed the bipartisan legislation spearheaded by the Illinois State Black Caucus, Chairman Rita Mayfield (D – Waukegan) and Senator Donne Trotter ( D – Chicago).
The two, along with other state legislators, worked diligently to win the support of Republican lawmakers from across the aisle, who risked sharing the blame for school closings had the funding not been approved. The bill appropriates $600,000,000 for higher education earmarking state monies for state universities, state and city colleges and the MAP grant program.
Details of the money each institution will receive was first reported by the Defender in this story posted online earlier today: https://chicagodefender.com/2016/04/25/higher-education-funding-todays-weather/
When asked this morning if she thought Governor Rauner would sign the bill today; Representative Mayfield resounding said “Absolutely.” It looks as though her words have come to pass.
