The 58th Annual Rainbow PUSH Coalition International Convention began on a rainy Thursday (Aug. 15), kicking off a weeklong event that runs through Aug. 22. The convention coincides with the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, as the city will be buzzing with activity. Hosted at Rainbow PUSH headquarters, the convention will feature a diverse agenda, with daily discussions and events to engage and inspire attendees.
This time-honored event is pivotal, bringing together leaders from across the state to discuss the people’s agenda.
Building ‘The People’s Movement’
Throughout the weekend, thought leaders, activists, educators, policymakers and community members will engage in meaningful discussions to build what is known as “The People’s Movement.”
On Thursday, discussions featured covered a range of essential topics, including education. Topics included advocating for high-quality public education for every child, exploring the future of higher education and examining the role of universities in fostering democracy and civic engagement to develop the next generation.
Prominent Leaders Address Critical Issues
There was also a rally featuring compelling speeches and messages from distinguished leaders and advocates, including U.S. Rep. Jonathan Jackson, Supreme Court Justice Joy Cunningham, CPS Chief Executive Officer Pedro Martinez, Mayor Brandon Johnson, V& J Holdings CEO Valerie Daniels-Carter and President & Founder of the Transformative Justice Coalition Barbara Arnwine.
Rep. Jackson, Rev. Jesse Jackson’s son, said it is a great honor to stand before the audience today as their representative. He expresses his love and deep gratitude to his father.
Rep. Jackson also expressed his thoughts about Vice President Kamala Harris and her election chances. He drew parallels between her and Barack Obama, who rose from State Senator to U.S. Senator and eventually President. He spoke about how these movements continue to resonate today and why the rally was held on behalf of “The People’s Agenda.”
Project 2025 and the Fight for Equality
In closing, Jonathan also touched on Project 2025, the 922-page document from the Heritage Foundation that outlines a four-pronged agenda already being implemented. This includes efforts to cut diversity, equity and inclusion programs, undermine women’s reproductive rights, and challenge access to higher education.
“The attacks are real, but we must continue fighting back because we are on the right side of history,” Rep. Jackson said.
Congressman Danny Davis responded to Rep. Jackson’s comments and introduced Mayor Johnson, saying, “This week, we will address all the critical issues and take decisive action. Jonathan and I often reflect on our good fortune—he has the honor of receiving guidance from his father, Congressman Jesse Jackson. In contrast, I have the privilege of representing the city where I live and work. I am proud to serve under a mayor representing everyone, especially as the first person from the West Side to hold this office.”
Mayor Johnson added, “The Rainbow PUSH Coalition has tirelessly worked toward peace, equity, and progress for Chicago and communities worldwide. We continue Reverend Jesse Jackson’s legacy of uplifting Black communities and uniting nations. This annual convention reminds us to keep hope alive.
Focusing on public education is essential as they discuss the people’s agenda.
Mayor Johnson’s Vision for Education and Equity
Mayor Johnson, a former teacher and a parent in Chicago Public Schools, is committed to ensuring that young people have access to education, employment, and recreation opportunities.
Johnson also stated, “Achieving this agenda requires our collective effort. We must ensure every child has access to quality schools, mental health services, public transportation and good-paying jobs. These are the dreams we must realize together.”
A Call to Action for Voter Mobilization
Arnwine addressed the importance of voting in the upcoming election.
“We have a mission ahead, folks. In the next 80-plus days, we must stay motivated and committed to one crucial goal: ensuring that everyone eligible to vote does so. If you’ve been talking to your family, classmates or friends about the importance of voting, stand up right now!” she said.
“Show us that you are among those who will make a difference. Stand up and demonstrate your commitment to making sure people show up and show out this November.”
Honoring John Mitchell’s Legacy
The Rainbow PUSH Coalition also paid tribute to their Chief of Staff, John Mitchell, who passed away in June at the age of 57 after battling cancer. His wife and two young children attended the event to remember his dedication and legacy.

Daily Agendas Drive Collective Change
Each day of the convention will focus on a different agenda, including topics like Women’s Policy, Labor and the GOTV Rally, as well as discussions on “Silencing Our Voices,” “Dividing Our Country,” and “Platforms and Policy.”
The overarching goal is to spark change, starting at the local level and extending globally. The event emphasized that this is a crucial year to vote, but real change requires collective action.
