CHICAGO (AP) — Five Illinois communities will share nearly $2 million in federal grants designed to create jobs and boost economic development.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says Chicago, Champaign, Macomb, Rock Island and Rockford get nearly $2 million in what are called Economic Development Administration grants.
The agency — part of the U.S. Commerce Department — is charged with helping support economic development in distressed communities by helping them become more competitive in the global economy. The grants are aimed at improving the economic picture. That includes funding a plan to determine the best industries for the Rockford area to creating a strategy supporting private investment around Macomb.
According to a news release, the biggest grant went to Rock Island, which will receive nearly $1.5 million to build a sustainable business park.
