Chicago’s Burnham Park was filled with energy and enthusiasm on Saturday, Sept. 7, as over 2,000 participants gathered for the 41st Annual UNCF Chicago Walk for Education. This year’s event, which featured a 5K Walk/Fun Run and a 10K Bike/Skate, aimed to raise $200,000 to support scholarships for 37 historically Black colleges and universities.
In a historic moment for the Walk, recent Spelman College graduate and student justice advocate Amara Harris served as the event’s first Grand Marshal. The selection of Harris, known for her activism and academic excellence, reflected the Walk’s ongoing commitment to inspiring the next generation of leaders.
“I am so honored to serve as the Grand Marshal of the UNCF Walk for Education,” said Harris during her opening remarks. “Education is critical for today’s youth, and UNCF is providing the necessary resources to help them attend college and, most importantly, graduate.”
The event drew notable local figures, including Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, who served as Honorary Chair, and Ramonski Luv from FM Omni-Channel Radio, who emceed the festivities. Throughout the day, participants engaged in various activities, including visiting Education Row to access scholarship information and resources vital for students and families.
The Walk, which raised significant funds for scholarships, remains a symbol of community resilience and empowerment. With each step taken and each dollar raised, participants and organizers have shown their unwavering dedication to educational equity and systemic change, inspiring hope for a brighter future.
