Fuller Park Community Development Corporation hosts the Second Annual URBAANE Conference Friday at Chicago State University, 9501 S. King Dr., from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
What would you do if a natural disaster struck your home or community? Are you prepared to survive a natural disaster? These questions and more will be addressed during the Urban Resolutions for Bridging African Americans to Natural Environments (URBAANE) Conference, themed: Suffering in Silence: Disaster Preparedness & Food Security in the Face of Climate Change.
In a time when global climate change has contributed to the larger number of natural disasters that affect the housing and food security of many communities, it is necessary for residents to learn how to survive in emergency situations. Hurricane Katrina and most recently Hurricane Isaac, along with other recent disasters, have shown many people and communities they need to be prepared. The goal of the URBAANE Conference is to prepare residents for survival should a disaster strike the Chicagoland area.
Attendees will participate in a series of panels designed to educate and inform the public on survival techniques. The sessions will be interactive with audience participation and free lunch and refreshments are included with registration.
Registration and continental breakfast begins at 8 a.m., followed by a plenary session, official welcome and the introduction of keynote speaker Queen Quet Marquetta L. Goodwine, chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. Queen Quet is an environmentalist, cultural historian, film consultant and performance artist.
The Chicago Defender is a media partner of the URBAANE Conference.
