DECATUR, IL– The Illinois State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting of a Decatur man, who is in serious condition.

Interim Decatur Police Chief James Getz said the 40-year-old man, who was allegedly armed with a gun and knife, was in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the chest, reports WTLX.

“We ask that everyone remain peaceful and reserve judgment until all the facts are known,” Getz said, adding that the Illinois State Police would handle the investigation, “which is standard protocol … in officer-involved, deadly force incidents.”

The interim chief also noted that two white police officers responding to the call encountered a man matching the description. “During the engagement” one of the officers fired his weapon, and medical personnel were immediately called to the scene, according to the website.

The police provided no further details.
