It’s always humbling when an actor is on the front lines with everyday people to fight for a cause they believe it. But every once in a while, that passion leads to arrest.

Such was the case for Rosario Dawson who was arrested on Capitol Hill on Friday after a week of pro-democracy demonstrations.

As reported by The Guardian, Dawson was briefly detained for processing by police in Washington and will be required to pay a $50 fine, but does not face a court appearance or imprisonment. More than 800 people have been arrested for staging sit-ins on the steps of Congress during five days of protests by a movement known as Democracy Spring.

The 36-year-old Latina is a Bernie Saunders supporter, wearing pins from the presidential candidate during the protest. The main focus of the recent Democracy Spring protest was fair and equal voting rights for people of color across the United States.

“The police were really great with us, really lovely” she said about the arrest. “I have to say that is not the case for so many people: Dreamers, Black Lives Matter activists, so many people are not seeing this kind of courageousness… I hope that officers across the nation can take heed of that and recognize that the peaceful protests that are going around the nation should also be treated in the same way as we are being treated today.”

In Dawson’s home state of New York, the primaries are this Tuesday, April 19. While former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to win, Saunders support seems to be growing in the already blue state.

Dawson, along with director Spike Lee, was present for the Bernie Saunders march that took place in Brooklyn last week.
