Former Prince protege and front singer for the group Vanity 6 has passed away in Fremont, California. Canadian-born as Denise Matthews, she started modeling at a young age and during the 80’s started acting in some low-budget films until she caught the eye of Prince, whose career was just starting to skyrocket in the early eighties.
In 1982, the group released its only album titled “Nasty Girl”. The song, even though it was credited to Vanity, was written and composed by Prince and became number one on the R&B charts in November 1982.
The heartbreaking announcement was confirmed by Gisela Hernandez, spokeswoman for the Washington Hospital Health Care System. There was no mention as to the cause of death.
