HOUSTON — A Texas man is dead after police reported that he shot himself while taking “selfies” as he was holding a gun pointed at himself.
Deleon Alonso Smith, 19, had reportedly found a gun earlier in the day and was busying himself taking selfies with the firearm. Tragically, the gun went off as he was taking pictures at his apartment in southwest Houston at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Smith died of a gunshot wound to the throat.
Smith was holding the weapon and posting them to social media websites as he took photos of himself and his cousin when the gun discharged. The family rushed to his aid after they heard the shot, but were unable to save Smith.
Investigators say the cousin was in another room when the gun fired. According to KHOU, Smith was the father of two young daughters, while another report stated Smith was set to begin college in the fall.
Police said, while they are still investigating, all appearances is that this was an accident. No other injuries were reported.
