BALTIMORE — While Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby continues to deal with the prosecuting the death of black teen Freddy Gray while he was in police custody a few months ago — which made national headlines and caused some to riot — the prosecutor now has to come to grips with even more gruesome and sinister crime.
Three black males have been charged with breaking into the home of a teenage girl and allegedly raping her, strangling her to death and then setting her on fire to cover their crimes.
Andonay Dixon, 23, John Childs, 20, and Raeshawn Rivers, 14, have been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree rape, arson, kidnapping, conspiracy and other charges stemming from the death of 16-year-old Arnesha Bowers. Each faces life in prison, including Rivers who is being charged as an adult.
The horrific crime was reportedly part of a gang initiation as all three have Bloods gang ties.
Bowers’ body was discovered June 7 inside her grandmother’s scorched home, the Baltimore Sun reports. Most tragically, the youngest suspect, Rivers, knew Bowers and allegedly masterminded the heinous crime. Officials say Dixon and Childs broke into the northeast Baltimore home, stole a computer and cash, killed the teen, and set the house on fire to cover up the rape and murder of the young girl.
Bowers was eventually found in the basement, restrained, sexually assaulted and choked to death by an electric cord.
“I can only imagine what the last moments of Arnesha’s life were like,” said Major Stanley Branford at a press conference earlier this month. “It had to have been pure hell.”
Bowers’ grandmother told the station her granddaughter was known for her upbeat personality.
“Arnesha had a beautiful smile and everyone would comment when they met her, ‘You have a lovely smile’ and she had a beautiful heart to match,” the woman said.
The total list of charges against the teens are as follows: first degree murder, second degree murder, first degree arson, first degree rape, second degree rape, first degree burglary, kidnapping, false imprisonment, robbery with deadly weapon or dangerous weapon, open wear/carry deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit first and second degree rape, conspiracy to commit first degree burglary, conspiracy to kidnap, conspiracy to commit false imprisonment, conspiracy to commit robbery with deadly or dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit first degree arson.
