Atlanta Dream rookie sensation Shoni Schimmel has been selected to participate in the Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game 2015 on Friday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. ET in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Schimmel, the crowd-pleasing, ball-handling wizard and deft shot maker, is one of three WNBA stars to be chosen to participate in the coveted NBA All-Star Weekend, joining supertar Skylar Diggins of the Tulsa Shock and Tina Charles of the New York Liberty. The spectacular and unorthodox guard was chosen after stellar rookie season that saw her be named MVP of Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star 2014 after scoring an All-Star Game record 29 points with eight assists.
Schimmel was also named the league’s Player of the Week on Aug. 18, set a WNBA record for most assists in her first four games in the league (37) and ranked sixth among rookies in scoring, averaging 8.3 points per game.
Schimmel joins a long line of WNBA players who have participated in the All-Star Celebrity Game, including Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings, Becky Hammon, Lisa Leslie, Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi and Schimmel’s Dream teammate, Angel McCoughtry.
Others slated to participate include three-time MVP and comedic superstar Kevin Hart; film star Ansel Elgort; Anthony Anderson (ABC’s “blackish”); Common (“Selma”); Little League phenom Mo’ne Davis; Arcade Fire’s Win Butler; actor Chadwick Boseman (“42″); “America’s Got Talent” host Nick Cannon; former NBA All-Star and New York Knicks Assistant General Manager Allan Houston; Basketball Hall of Famer Chris Mullin; gold medal-winning U.S. Paralympic athlete Blake Leeper; actor Michael Rapaport; Memphis Grizzlies owner Robert Pera; NBA TV’s “NBA Inside Stuff presented by Samsung Galaxy” co-host Kristen Ledlow; and Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan.
New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony and the team’s No. 1 fan, Spike Lee, will coach this year’s game alongside ESPN Radio’s “Mike & Mike” hosts Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg. NBA Cares Ambassador Isaiah Austin, founder of The Isaiah Austin Foundation which provides support for the awareness and research of Marfan syndrome, will make his All-Star debut as assistant coach.
