Reggie Love (pictured), President Barack Obama’s once-ever-present personal aide, is back and he’s spilling the tea — on himself, that is!
Love, who earned the name “bodyman” because of his close relationship with the President, has written a memoir that is scheduled to be published by Simon and Schuster on Feb. 3, according to the Washington Post.
In “Power Forward: My Presidential Education,” Love reportedly talks about coming of age on the campaign trail, politics, and basketball. Fresh out of out of Duke University, where he’d been captain of the Blue Devils basketball squad, Love joined then-Ill. Democratic Sen. Obama in 2007.
Love rose to become Obama’s loyal personal aide, a role he would keep through the presidential primaries, general election, and most of the first term. Love finally left the job in 2011 to pursue an M.B.A. degree at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
But during a stressful time on the campaign trail in West Palm Beach, Love recounts how a college friend paid him a visit and “ended up staying the night,” the Post writes. The next morning, while his guest was, ahem, still in bed, Love prepped for the day. That’s when the man who would become the nation’s first Black president let himself in to the hotel room, using a Secret Service master key:
I remember the most peremptory of knocks, the sound of his voice talking even as he walked in. … He was charged up, going a mile a minute.
“Hey, Reggie, we need to go over the schedule” – at which point the senator finally noticed my friend in bed, covers pulled to her throat, mortified.
“Oh,” he said. “I apologize.” Then he turned around and hurried out.
“Was that?” she asked, face red.
“Senator Barack Obama,” I said sheepishly.
While most bosses would have let it go, Obama apparently did not. Later that day, aboard a plane, Obama lamented about news coverage and other issue, when Love tried to lighten the mood, the Post notes:
I chimed in from the seat behind him. “You know, sir, if it’s any consolation, I’m having the time of my life.”
And the senator said to me, “Well, Reggie, it’s actually not a consolation to me that my campaign for president can help subsidize your love life.”
The remark drew laughter from David Axelrod, Robert Gibbs, and others on board. But Love still had a comeback:
“Actually, sir, I got way more action in college.”
We can’t wait to read the rest!
