The Boston Celtics have agreed in principle to trade Rajon Rondo and Dwight Powell to the Dallas Mavericks for Brandan Wright, Jae Crowder, a 2015 first round pick and a future second round draft pick.
Rondo, a perennial all-star, is in the final year of a 5-year, $55 million dollar deal, but recently stated that he’d be open to re-signing in Dallas if he were traded there. The play-maker joins a very talented starting lineup that already features Monta Ellis, newly added Chandler Parsons, Dirk Nowitzki, and Tyson Chandler. This immediately puts the Mavs into the championship conversation, and solidifies Boston’s all-out rebuild.
With rookie point guard Marcus Smart set to take the reigns, the Celtics are rumored to also be shopping swing-man Jeff Green.
The move also throws a wrench into the plans of the New York Knicks, who hoped to sign Rondo and Marc Gasol in next year’s free agency class. We’ll have to see what plan b has in store.
