beyonce, rihanna,

Sex does sell. Everyone knows that. But some R&B songstresses want to change the landscape of music — eliminating sex.

There are up and coming singers who feel like the de-throne Beyonce and Rihanna as the reigning divas of crossover urban music.

Some criticize Bey and RiRi for dancing around on stage half-naked singing over-sexualized songs.

But the new age of female singers are changing R&B with smooth vocals, penning their songs and becoming role models for young women.

“We’re a generation of women making our own music without having to sexualize our bodies,” British singer Rosie Lowe said.

Lowe’s goal is set a good example for younger audiences of music.

“There’s a generation out there who don’t have that many role models who aren’t using their bodies. The more we can offer an alternative, the better,” she said.

Lowe doesn’t think Bey or RiRi are good role models and are in fact reinforcing stereotypes.

“They’re the main culprits because they’re so in the mainstream,” she said. “I agree that your body is your own, but I do think they have a responsibility. They’re making young women think, to get where they are, they have to twerk or use their bodies, and it’s not true. It’s scary and damaging.”

Kelela Mizanekristos agreed and called out RiRi’s lack of responsibility as a pop star while expressing her love for music.

“Sounding like I have agency in a song is important to me. I want to feel empowered by the music.”

“Maybe Rihanna’s agency comes in through her choice of songs,” she added. “But there are things that aren’t a priority for her.”

But only time will tell if these up and coming singers can actually replace Rihanna or Beyonce — who have been heavyweights on the music charts for YEARS.
