It goes without saying – no one expected a movie about a tornado full of killer sharks hitting Los Angeles to be anything but a low-budget joke for the Syfy channel.

Turns out the joke was on us.

Not only did people tune in out of sheer curiosity, but “Sharknado” left serious teeth marks across social media during its premiere in July 2013. According to Trendrr, which tracks social chatter, it was Syfy’s most social broadcast ever, with over 386,000 mentions on social media during the night, three times the channel’s previous record.

Syfy swiftly locked down its stars Ian Ziering (Fin Shepard) and Tara Reid (April Wexler) for a sequel. “Sharknado 2: The Second One,” premieres Thursday (July 30) at 9 p.m. with more camp, thicker cheesiness, a ton of celebrity cameos…and Vivica A. Fox.
