Big Daddy Kane is known the world over as the rapper’s rapper. Rolling Stone magazine ranked his song “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’” #25 on its list of The 50 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of All Time, calling him “a master wordsmith of rap’s late-golden age and a huge influence on a generation of MCs.” They added, “Legend has it that even the Eighties’ greatest rapper, Rakim, turned down a challenge to go mic-to-mic with Kane.”
We thank him for sharing his words. We know and understand this Mother’s Day will be hard.- Oretha Winston, Lead Editor
These are the words he wrote for his beloved mother.
Mother I’d Rather
I’d rather walk thru life in darkness without a sign of light,
Just knowing the presence of my mother will forever shine bright.
I’d rather be in a winter storm on the most beautiful summer day, Because my mother’s embrace can take the frigid feeling away.
I’d rather see the cost of living shoot sky high,
Because a mother’s love is priceless and something you earn not buy.
I’m talking unconditional love that you only see randomly,
She would give up anything in this world to do for her family.
So as painful as it is and as rough as it may be,
I’d rather be doing this for her, then put her thru the pain of doing this for me.
Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers near, far and in the heavens above.
