Historically Black Colleges and Universities are getting a bit of a marketing boost with the sale of a special calendar for the coming year.

The 2009 Black History HBCU Calendar is a pictorial chronicle of Black history in the making.

Third in a series of eight editions, the calendar features 12 HBCUs that were founded between 1876 and 1884, and follows the journey through Black history by highlighting dates respective to Black culture.

Proceeds from the $5.99 calendar will be shared among the dozen institutions featured: Meharry Medical College, Prairie View A&M University, Stillman College, Jackson State University, Philander Smith College, Florida Memorial University, Livingstone College, Southern University and A&M College, Spelman College, Lane College, Paine College and Arkansas Baptist College.

Of special note, President-elect Barack Obama, the late comedian Bernie Mac and Oprah Winfrey are featured in the 2009 calendar.

“The keepsake calendar serves to support efforts in two areas,” calendar creator Tracy Alston said. “To raise funds for education and awareness of HBCUs and to document achievements of outstanding African Americans.”

The calendars are available at Walgreens stores or online at www.blackhistoryhbcucalendar.com.
