CHICAGO (AP) — Two Illinoisans have been honored at the White House for community service. Daisy Brooks and Lisa Nigro were among 13 nationwide winners of the Presidential Citizens Medal on Wednesday. The award was started four decades ago to recognize Americans who have provided outstanding service to their country. Brooks runs Daisy’s Resource and Developmental Center in North Chicago. It’s a place for young mothers and their infants to live and get their lives on track with school. Nigro runs a restaurant in Chicago that helps feed homeless people. U.S. Sen. Roland Burris says both women exemplify courage, self-sacrifice and service, which is what the medal stands for. Copyright 2010 The Associated Press.
