1,000 Families To Received Ham and Food Boxes For Easter Weekend

1-800-TruckWreck fights food insecurity by giving away ingredients for bountiful meals over the holiday weekend.

1-800-TruckWreck, powered by Witherite Law Group, provided families in the Chicago community with 1,000 hams and food boxes for Easter weekend.

The giveaway took place on Friday (March 29), from 3-5 p.m. at House of Hope, 752 East 114th Street, located in the South Side neighborhood of Pullman.

1-800-TruckWreck owner Amy Witherite was on-site handing out 1,000 hams and 1,000 food boxes filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, shelf-stable food items, and other essentials, along with radio legend, Joe Soto of iHeart Media Chicago.

The event was free and open to the public, and supplies were distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. An estimated 1,000 families received hams and food boxes, and no family was turned away.

According to Chicago’s Food Equity Council, a community survey from the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 26% of Chicagoans are at risk for food insecurity, many of whom are children in the Black and Latinx communities. 1-800-TruckWreck is working to address this disparity by providing local families with the ingredients necessary for a hearty meal this Easter.

“Nearly 30% of households in the Chicago area are estimated to be experiencing food insecurity,” shares Amy Witherite, owner of Witherite Law Group and 1-800-TruckWreck. “Hunger is something many of these families are dealing with year-round. Easter is often around spring break when expenses, particularly with food, increase. We are honored to be able to provide these families with the ingredients and tools necessary to cook a delicious, plentiful meal at home for a memorable Easter Sunday while taking some of that financial burden off their hands.”

It is estimated that more than 500,000 people are facing hunger and food insecurity in Chicago’s 70+ communities. According to the Northwestern Institute for Policy Research, approximately 5.6% – 17.4% of households nationwide are in low-income areas with low access to healthy food. Feeding America reports that 1 in 8 children face hunger in the area served by the Greater Chicago Food Depository. On a state level, 1 in 11 individuals in Illinois face hunger, 1 in 9 of which are children.

Over 95 countries around the globe celebrate Easter with varying traditions; family time and meals are a staple for most. In the U.S., Easter dinner traditionally consists of glazed ham, various side dishes and desserts.

By donating hams and food boxes for Easter weekend, 1-800-TruckWreck aims to provide a memorable holiday meal for families by relieving the financial strain that comes with purchasing healthy, fresh groceries. It is one of the many initiatives the company is dedicated to facilitating in its mission to give back to local communities.
