NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – A grand jury has indicted a white South Carolina police officer on charges of murder for shooting a black man in the back while running away from him, killing him instantly.
In April Officer Michael Slager of the North Charleston police stopped Walter Scott for a traffic infraction and shot Scott as he was running away.
Video showed Scott running from the scene of the stop as Slager fired eight shots, killing him. Video captured also shows Slager picking up a Taser from where he fired his gun and dropping a Taser beside Scott’s body.
The grand jury returned a murder indictment on Monday.
Local prosecutor Scarlett A. Wilson confirmed that the trial will not be re-located.
Wilson discussed what the state has to prove in its prosecution of Slager.
“As long as malice is proven in the heart and mind, the state has proven its case,” she said, according to the New York Times.
Walter Scott’s brother, Ronald Scott, said the family is satisfied with the grand jury’s decision.
“We are happy and pleased about that right now,” Mr. Scott said.
