State Rep. Lamont J. Robinson( D-Chicago) recently supported legislation establishing an annual property tax refund process, as well as a property tax relief task force charged with developing comprehensive solutions to address increasing rates for Illinois homeowners.
“Families in our community cannot afford property taxes that continue to increase each year,” Robinson said. “It is critical that we work to provide property tax relief to those who need it most while ensuring funding for schools, libraries and other resources our communities need.”
The Robinson-backed Senate Bill 39 establishes the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund to provide property tax rebates. The rebates would be funded by the state, in part through a proposed Fair Tax supported by Robinson, which cuts income taxes on local residents while requiring millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share.
Robinson also supported Senate Bill 1932 which would create the Property Tax Relief Task Force designed to review best practices to create short and long-term property tax relief. The task force is expected to submit a report on findings and suggested solutions by the end of the year to the governor and General Assembly.
“Providing property tax relief to families in our community is a fundamental part of my promise to build a stronger Illinois,” Robinson said. “While we have taken the crucial first steps toward creating a better financial future for our families, there is still much more to do.”
