The world celebrated what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 96th birthday today.  In South Africa, supporters of the former president honored him through  acts of kindness, according to the Associated Press. People picked up garbage, made meals for the elderly and even donated food and other items to the less fortunate, the publication reported.
July 18 is now Nelson Mandela International Day, the United Nations announced.
People were asked to complete charitable acts for approximately 67 minutes, the Associated Press wrote, to symbolize “the anti-apartheid leader’s 67 years of public service.”
Mandela’s widow, Graca Machel packed food with volunteers at a Johannesburg convention center.

Mandela was 95-years-old when he died Dec. 5.
