The Magical weekend of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians/AACM’s year long 50th Anniversary kicks off Wednesday April 22 with the Hanah Jon Taylor Artet, featuring Yosef Ben Israel and Dushun Mosley, plus Saalik’s Epoch Zed: Ancestors’ Spirits, Far and Beyond and a solo performance by Tomeka Reid at The Promontory, 5311 S. Lake Park in Hyde Park. If you haven’t been to the Promontory you’re in for a treat. The downstairs restaurant for starters is where you can choose toy begin with dinner and drinks before settling into the evening of musical adventure and intrigue. You may want to make reservations to make sure you get to the concert performance on time. The performance space upstairs is spacious with great acoustics, great bar and service and the music promises to be entertaining and soul satisfying.

Native Chicagoan band leader and professor Hanah Jon Taylor  currently resides in Madison Wisconsin where says he has the opportunity to focus on his music without distractions. Taylor moved to Madison years ago from Chicago and has been a long-time member of the influential Chicago-based Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). His career spans lever 30 years  and he has performed worldwide with musicians ranging from Woodstock-famous singer-songwriter Richie Havens to Nina Simone, Miles Davis, and many of the AACM’s leading lights. Taylor has a substantial reputation in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Today Taylor is a music professor at the Madison Media Institute.

Taylor was founder and director of The Madison Center for the Creative and Cultural Arts, which offered concerts and multi-arts classes. 

Saalik’s Epoch Zed presents Ancestors Spirits, Far and Beyond

Epoch means a period of time in history or a person’s life, typically one marked by notable events or particular characteristics.  This band which features music from across the universe, will be all about time and history. A fusion of jazz, rock, soul and world music, Saalik’s Epoch Zed’s music will be a spontaneous cluster of sound going beyond the limits.

In the April 22 concert the group will celebrating the spirit of their AACM ancestors. Improvisation is the main ingredient of this collective. You will hear themes of Vandy Harris music and some themes of others as well. This will be an event you won’t forget. The band features : Saalik Ziyad on vocals, Taalib-Din Ziyad on vocals and flute, Fred Jackson on woodwinds, Preyas Roy on vibes and electronics, Alex Wing on bass, oud and guitar, Vincent Davis on drums

Tomeka Reid

Chicago based cellist, composer and educator, Tomeka Reid has been described as “a remarkably versatile player,” (Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune). Equally adept in classical and jazz contexts, Ms. Reid predominantly finds herself in experimental and improvisatory settings and composes for a wide range of instrumentation, from big band to chamber ensemble. Ms. Reid’s music combines her love for groove along with freer concepts. 

Tomeka Reid is an integral part of Dee Alexander’s Evolution Ensemble, Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Ensemble/Strings, Mike Reed’s Loose Assembly, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) Great Black Music Ensemble, and co-leads the internationally recognized string trio, Hear in Now with performances throughout  Europe and in the US. In addition to the aforementioned ensembles, Ms. Reid performs with many of today’s forward thinking musicians in the world of jazz and creative music including Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Roscoe Mitchell, Jeb Bishop,  Edward Wilkerson and Harrison Bankhead.

Ms. Reid also leads her own trio featuring guitarist Matt Schneider and bassist Josh Abrams, for which she composes. Ms. Reid can be heard on numerous studio recordings. As an educator, Reid has led string improvisation workshops in Italy and the US. Most recently she co-directed the 2012 Vancouver Jazz Festival’s High School Jazz Intensive. For seven years, Ms. Reid co-directed the string program at the University of Chicago’s Laboratory School for students grade 5 thru 12. Ms. Reid is also an ABD doctoral candidate at the University of Illinois: Urbana-Champaign. 

As a composer, Reid has been commissioned by the AACM, the Chicago Jazz Festival and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble and has had several opportunities to showcase her work abroad at festivals such as Umbria Jazz, An Insolent Noise and Vignola Jazz. She has been nominated and awarded residencies for composition with the Ragdale Foundation and the 2nd Annual Make Jazz Fellowship hosted by the 18th Street Arts Organization. Ms. Reid was selected as a 2012 participant in the Jazz Composers Orchestra Institute held at the University of California: Los Angeles.
