CHICAGO (AP) — Two members of a notorious unit of Chicago Police officers that stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from suspected drug dealers were the subject of dozens of citizen complaints between 2001 and 2006. However, they were never disciplined beyond a single reprimand for one of them.
Records released by the department indicate Jerome Finnigan was the subject of 52 complaints and Keith Herrera received 53 complaints. Finnigan is in prison after being convicted of ordering a hit on a fellow officer to keep him from revealing the scheme. Herrera cooperated with authorities and is out of custody after serving a short sentence.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Herrera and Finnigan and two other members of the unit topped the list of 662 officers who received more than 10 misconduct complaints.
