Palestine Signals Waning Negotiations With Israel

The chief Palestinian negotiator says Israel must choose between building West Bank settlements or a peace agreement but “they can’t have both.”

Speaking to reporters Monday, Saeb Erekat signaled that Palestinian authorities are prepared to end nine months of negotiations if an agreement for peace is not reached by an April 29 deadline set last summer.

He declined to discuss details of a secret U.S. proposal to continue negotiating, and said Palestinian authorities have not been given documents of what it might contain.

Erekat insisted any agreement must include a Palestinian state drawn on boundaries set in 1967, before Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with President Barack Obama on Monday.
